Life Cover Calculator
Get a starting figure for how much life cover to think about, based on the debts, income and one-off costs you enter. It is an educational estimate and does not calculate how much life insurance anyone needs.
Estimate a starting figure for life cover
This is an educational estimate based on the figures you enter. It does not calculate how much life insurance you need.
How the calculation works
The calculator adds together outstanding mortgage and other debts, a chosen number of years of income to replace, and any one-off costs such as funeral or childcare and education costs. It then subtracts any cover already in place, such as a death-in-service benefit, to leave an estimated gap.
This mirrors how people commonly think about the amount of cover to consider, as set out in life insurance explained. It does not take account of tax, inflation, investment growth or wider personal circumstances, so it is a starting point for thinking about cover rather than a calculation of how much life insurance you need.
Nothing entered here is sent anywhere. The calculation runs in your browser and no figures are stored, logged or added to the page address.
Life insurance explained covers how cover levels, terms and trusts work, and death in service vs life insurance explains how a workplace death-in-service benefit fits alongside a personal policy.
